There is no shortage of news. What is in short supply is the time and space to make sense of it — to go beyond the headline, ask the uncomfortable question, and follow a story to where it actually leads.
That is what The Free Pen exists to do.
We started as a book publication venture for authors, who were good writers but turned away by established publishers. This is why our tagline says, “You Write, We Publish”.
What we are
The Free Pen (TFP) is an independent digital publication based in India. We write about current affairs, history, politics, science, health, books, and the ideas that shape the world we live in. Our pieces are written to last longer than a news cycle — researched, considered, and readable.
We do not chase clicks. We chase clarity.
Our readers include students preparing for competitive examinations such as the UPSC Civil Services, professionals who want to stay informed without being overwhelmed, and anyone who believes that good writing and rigorous thinking still matter.
What we publish
Our content spans several formats and subject areas, organised under the following sections:
News Analysis — A closer look at the stories making headlines. We provide context, background, and the questions the breaking-news cycle rarely stops to ask.
Burning Issues — In-depth coverage of the topics dominating public debate: elections, economy, environment, geopolitics, science, and society.
Deep Dives — Long-form pieces on subjects that reward sustained attention — from the trade networks of the Indus Valley to the mechanics of modern surveillance.
Explained — Clear, jargon-free explanations of complex topics: how a policy works, what a court ruling means, why a financial event happened.
History and Society — Stories from the past that illuminate the present. We believe that understanding where we came from is inseparable from understanding where we are.
Books and Ideas — Reviews, summaries, and essays drawn from the world of non-fiction, philosophy, and intellectual debate.
Our editorial values
We hold ourselves to a small number of principles that guide everything we publish.
Accuracy first. We verify before we publish. Where facts are disputed or uncertain, we say so plainly. We correct errors promptly and transparently.
Independence. TFP has no political affiliation, no corporate owner, and no advertiser influence over editorial decisions. What we publish is governed by editorial judgement alone.
Depth over speed. We would rather publish a well-researched piece late than a half-formed one first. The internet has enough noise. We try to add signal.
Accessibility. Serious writing need not be inaccessible writing. We aim for the kind of prose that a curious, intelligent reader — regardless of academic background — can engage with and enjoy.
Who writes for TFP
TFP is edited and produced by a small core team of writers and editors with backgrounds spanning journalism, history, public policy, and the social sciences. Our contributors bring expertise from across disciplines and are united by a commitment to writing that informs rather than inflames.
We also publish pieces from independent writers and thinkers who have something worth saying and the ability to say it well. If you write with rigour and care — and have a story that deserves telling — we want to hear from you.
Write for us
The Free Pen welcomes contributions from writers, researchers, academics, and informed observers. We publish original work across all our subject areas. If you have a piece in mind — an analysis, a deep dive, an essay, a review — write to us with a brief pitch or a draft.
We read every submission. We respond to those that are a fit. We edit with care and publish with credit.
