A coalition of five major Left parties in India—the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist Liberation), Revolutionary Socialist Party, and Forward Bloc—have issued a joint statement strongly condemning the recent US bombing of Iran. The parties described the attack as a grave violation of Iranian sovereignty and the United Nations Charter, warning that it will escalate global tensions, destabilise West Asia, and have severe economic consequences worldwide.
The statement challenges the US and Israeli justification for the bombing, which claims Iran was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. It highlights that the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Director-General Rafael Grossi recently declared there was no proof of a systematic Iranian nuclear weapons programme. US intelligence agencies, too, reportedly lacked conclusive evidence of such development. Iran remains a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, underscoring the parties’ argument that the attack was unprovoked.
The Left parties accuse Israel of initiating an attack on Iran on 12 June to sabotage diplomatic negotiations between Iran and the US. They further assert that the US bombing, despite a prior two-week window for talks offered by former President Trump, reveals a disregard for intelligence assessments and diplomacy, instead pushing for war to establish imperialist dominance over West Asia and control global resources.
The US utilised B-2 stealth bombers to drop bunker-busting bombs, drawing parallels with the Iraq invasion based on similarly unverified claims. The statement condemns the US for its historical use of nuclear weapons and calls out the irony of its current rhetoric on nuclear threats.
The parties warn that the US attack will likely escalate the conflict with disastrous consequences for global peace and the livelihoods of ordinary people, particularly in countries like India that depend heavily on West Asian oil imports and migrant labour opportunities. They urge the Indian government to abandon its pro-US and pro-Israel foreign policy stance and join global efforts to halt the war.
The Left parties have called on their members and peace-loving citizens across India to organise protests against what they term imperialist aggression, emphasising the need to stand united against war and its economic fallout.
