India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that selection for the upcoming Test series in England will be based firmly on current form and merit, rather than past reputation or name recognition. This approach aims to keep the squad competitive and reward players who consistently perform well in both domestic and international cricket.
“Anyone can be called if they’re in good form,” Gambhir said. “We could only pick 18 players, but for me, it is always about being open to people who are in good form.” This openness signals a willingness to give opportunities to emerging talent and those who prove themselves in the domestic circuit.
Gambhir also spoke about Karun Nair, who has been recalled to the squad. “It’s great for the future of domestic cricket. All the youngsters playing domestic cricket will realise the importance of doing well,” he said. Gambhir praised Nair’s experience, noting his county cricket stint and current good form. “We won’t judge someone by one or two Test matches. If someone has scored heaps of runs, he will be given a decent run,” he added.

This philosophy encourages players to remain motivated and focused on their performances at every level, knowing that consistent excellence can open doors to international cricket. Gambhir’s meritocratic stance also puts pressure on established players to maintain their standards.
The coach’s comments come at a time when India is rebuilding its Test side with a mix of youth and experience. By prioritising form and fitness, Gambhir hopes to field the best possible team for the tough English conditions.
This pragmatic and inclusive selection policy reflects a modern approach to team building, where performance is king and opportunities are earned. It also sends a positive message to domestic players aspiring to break into the national side.
