The Indian Navy and the Royal Navy have once again demonstrated their growing maritime partnership through a comprehensive Passage Exercise (PASSEX) conducted on 9 and 10 June 2025 in the strategically vital North Arabian Sea. The exercise saw the Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Tabar, supported by a frontline submarine and the advanced P8I maritime patrol aircraft, operate alongside the UK Carrier Strike Group, led by the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales and the frigate HMS Richmond.
Over two days, the navies engaged in a series of complex and coordinated operations designed to enhance interoperability and operational readiness. Key activities included unified control of integral helicopters, intricate tactical manoeuvres, and joint anti-submarine warfare (ASW) drills, leveraging the sophisticated capabilities of both fleets. The exercise also featured professional exchanges between officers, fostering mutual understanding and the sharing of best practices in naval operations.
This PASSEX marks another milestone in the deepening defence relationship between India and the United Kingdom, reflecting a shared commitment to maintaining a secure, open, and rules-based maritime order. The collaboration highlights both nations’ resolve to safeguard vital sea lanes in the North Arabian Sea—a crucial corridor for global trade and energy supplies—against threats such as piracy, terrorism, and other illicit activities.
Beyond operational benefits, the exercise serves as a powerful symbol of the robust diplomatic and defence ties that continue to strengthen between the two countries. It paves the way for future joint exercises and expanded cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, reinforcing the role of navies as vital instruments of peace, stability, and international partnership.
As maritime challenges evolve, the Indian Navy and Royal Navy’s coordinated efforts underscore their shared vision for a peaceful and secure maritime environment, ensuring stability in one of the world’s most important strategic waterways.
