Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s new Test captain marks a significant turning point for the Men in Blue. Taking over the reins after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two of India’s most experienced and successful Test cricketers, Gill faces the daunting task of leading a team in transition. Speaking at a press conference before the squad’s departure for the five-match Test series against England, Gill was candid about the pressures that come with the role.
“Pressure of winning is always there,” Gill said. “Now that two very experienced players who helped India win so many matches are retired from Test cricket, it would be very hard to fill their space.” Yet, he was quick to add that the pressure is not something new or different. “There is always pressure on players before every series. The more important thing is that every player is used to handling pressure,” he emphasised.
Gill admitted that the responsibility of captaining the Test side was overwhelming when he first learned of the opportunity. “It’s going to be a big responsibility, but I am looking forward to the challenge being presented to us,” he said. His measured approach reflects maturity beyond his years, as he balances the excitement of leading with the understanding of the weight on his shoulders.
One of the key questions Gill faces is his position in the batting order, which remains undecided. “We still have some time. We’ll be playing an intra-squad match and have a 10-day camp in London, so we’ll decide on the batting order once we go there,” he explained. This flexibility shows the team’s willingness to adapt and find the best combinations for success.
Gill’s first series as captain will be closely watched, not just for his leadership but also for how he performs with the bat. He stressed that he wants to lead by example, focusing on his performance rather than statistics. “When I am batting out there, I want to play as a batsman and make decisions as a batsman. Averages and numbers aren’t something I look at, but I definitely want to lead by my performance,” he said.
As India prepare to face England in the challenging conditions of Leeds and Headingley, Gill’s calm and confident approach could be the steadying influence the team needs during this period of change.
